  • A Sample to work from (smaller version of the completed mural).
  • Pencils - Graphite and/or Watercolor Pencils.
  • Paint - You will probably have to use acrylic on the actual mural. You can use water color, tempera, crayons, or colored markers on your sample.
  • Containers - Mix as much as you can, keeping your mixtures in air tight containers, (for very small amounts get some clean baby food jars, or clean sour creme containers for larger mixes).

  • Sponges and Sponge Brushes - An assortment of sponges for paint application and clean up.
  • Rags or Paper Towells - For clean up.
  • Ruler, Tape Measure, Level - You will need these to measure the wall your painting and to keep things level.
  • Drafting Tape - (Optional) A tape that is not very sticky. You can use it as a stencil to make straight lines and mask areas you do not want paint on. Will remove easily. Be careful to remove the tape right after you are finished with that area so the acrylic doesn't stick to the tape when it dries and peel the paint from the wall.
  • Tarp - You will need either a plastic or canvas painters tarp to place on the floor where you are painting.
  • Step Stool, Ladder, or Scaffold - You will need something to make you taller when your painting areas that are higher up on the wall.

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Choose a location, and decide on the kind of medium you need to use. Use at least some of the same colors in the different pictures so that it all fits together and each section doesn't look like its from another planet. If it is to be out in the weather all the time, you will need to put a protective clear coat on it.

  2. Decide on a Theme. Your mural can be whimsical, a historical narrative, a study, or any theme.

  3. Collect subject matter, such as , pictures and information, etc..

  4. Go through a process of elimination, you can have too much as well as not enough subject matter in your mural. Decide what you need to tell your story or get across your idea and whether or not you will want a border on it. This can help to enclose it and let's you use color which might be needed for contrast or to bring out an element in your painting.

  5. Make a small sketch and color work-up, one diagram, and perhaps many small detailed pictures.

  6. Take the overall size of the space your mural will occupy or be in, and have someone good with figures help you decide how much bigger it will have to be. For instance all the separate sections in the mining mural were first done on 8" x 10" water color paper, in mixed media of water color and some pastels. On the actual mural those sections which were 8" x 10" are 5' x 7', the large center section was a 36" x 24", it became 8' x 21'. The complete mural size is 20' high and 40' wide.

  7. Preparing the surface - First you need to be sure it is in good condition. Make sure that the surface is smooth, and if not, sand where needed. Sanding is important if there is oil based paint present. Next, you will need to clean the surface, either with a commercial cleaner designed for this task or vinegar. That way the paint will adhere well to the surface, and will prevent peeling as time goes by.

  8. The next step is making your images bigger. The easiest way to do this is use a projector. The most time consuming, but sometimes necessary way is to make something like a stencil, which is very simply, an outline on card board, so it will be stiff enough to hold up on the wall and draw around.

  9. As you begin to paint, keep the image you are transferring an outline only, or the large flat areas of under-painting which you will do first. After that dries do the detail work.
