Two Artists Receive the First Official AFAP Show Awards
by AFAP President, Kay Robbins
Our primary mission at ARTFaces | ARTPlaces is to give worldwide exposure and recognition to artists via the Internet. In keeping with our mission, last year the AFAP Board of Directors voted to begin presenting awards in selected national and international "real time" art exhibitions. We invited our members to submit shows in their areas for our consideration. For the year 2000, we selected two national juried competitions, both sponsored by area art associations, submitted by AFAP members of those organizations.

From the Lafayette Art Association National Exhibition 2000 in Lafayette LA, we are pleased to present our first ever recipient of the ARTFaces | ARTPlaces Award of Artistic Merit, Pat SanSoucie of Clackamas OR for her 2D watermedia piece, Essence of a Sandcastle. The juror for this national competition of two- and three-dimensional art was Serge Hollerbach. Mr. Hollerbach was recently honored as a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society and was featured in The Artist's Magazine, January 1999 issue. The exhibition opened on March 9, 2000 with 112 pieces from artists in thirty-nine states and closed on April 25. Ms. SanSoucie was presented an award ribbon along with a complimentary AFAP membership and an AFAP Personal Gallery Page in www.artplaces.com.

Pat SanSoucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and color. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Applied Arts. Among her many professional memberships are: American Watercolor Society, Dolphin Fellowship; National Watercolor Society; Watercolor USA Honor Society; National Association of Women Artists. She has instructed numerous workshops in the US and in Mexico and has been featured in many national art magazine and art book publications. Mr. Getz has been featured in numerous national art magazine and book publications and conducts workshops across the country. Michelle is a former high school English and French teacher and professional quilter. She studied art "on the side" in libraries and museums and by taking occasional classes. She studied drawing and painting with instructors Kitty Cortie and Greg Henderson. When she relocated from Maine to North Carolina, she found the humid climate unfriendly to quilting and began experimenting with clay, studying ceramics (pottery) under Juliana Foy, Leah Leitson, Allen Buitekant and Bev Haley. Her art has been influenced by Bernie Vinzani and Katie MacGregor, as well. Michelle's continuing progress in both hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery and her dedicated experimentation with glazes and techniques have been favorably noted by area artists. You can see Michelle's work at her Website: http://www.artplaces.com/spencer/
Congratulations to Pat and Michelle on being our first AFAP award winners! We are proud to have them in our gallery of artists.
If you are a member of an art organization who sponsors a juried national or international show and would like for that show to be considered for an AFAP award contribution next year please submit information about the exhibition, along with your request, and email artfaces.com. Though the number of awards are limited we will consider all requests before making our selections.
