The human body and the many ways that it moves hold a great fascination for me. The expressive moves of the body and expressions of the faces of both children and adults can speak of many things without the need to utter a word.
I began sculpting small pieces, but when our grandchildren started to arrive, I found that a New World opened and the desire to create life size pieces became intense. The need to document and preserve (keep forever young) my children and grandchildren was the motivating influence that resulted in further study and creating life-size sculpture.
Creating public life-size sculpture was a natural progression of events. The first ones were of terracotta and now bronze.
Most of my advertising has been word of mouth. My work is in private and public collections in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Though she is largely self-taught, Bj. Michaelis studied sculpture at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. She is a member of the Dayton Visual Arts Association.
